Last week, I had the opportunity to give a guest lecture for a perception class at NCSU! My lecture was on vision and art, and I used paintings, film, and other visual art to demonstrate aspects of perception the students had learned about this semester.
For example, we discussed how differences in foveal and peripheral vision explained the phenomenon of Mona Lisa’s smile, which is only seen when looking at the painting from the corner of the eye. We also discussed Monet’s Impression, Sunrise as an example of using both color and luminance to evoke the desired feeling — in this case, an equiluminant sun that stands out only because of the colors creates an eerie atmosphere.

I really enjoyed giving this lecture, and hope I get the chance to give more like this in the future!
